Spate of fly-tipping in and around Bushey

March 13, 2021 9:06 PM

Steps to tackle fly-tippingIn the last few days we've visited and reported seven fly-tipping sites in and around Bushey. Two are on Berry Grove Lane and three are off the A41. Another is in Hillfeld Lane South. Our thanks to residents who've helped with this work. We've told council officers about each site, and hopefully they will clear the waste as soon as resources allow.Several of the sites are very unpleasant - with large quantities of domestic and trade waste, including household appliances, cables, bedding, and building debris, dumped among trees and vegetation. The photo above, with our campaigner Alan Matthews, was at a field off the A41.
Fly-tipping is not just unsightly but harmful for the environment and dangerous for wildlife. And it seems like it's currently on the rise in Bushey.

As your Lib Dem councillors for north Bushey we want to raise awareness and develop a plan to protect our neighbourhood more effectively from this vile problem.

We believe that Bushey is particularly vulnerable to fly-tipping. We're just outside London and have major roads such as the M1 and A41 but we also have an abundance of quiet fields and woodlands - and that combination is very attractive to illegal dumpers. This applies to much of Hertsmere borough, which is why we deserve more support and funding from central government and other agencies, to help pay for clean-ups and for measures to help deter fly-tippers and catch culprits. These include CCTV and where feasible physical barriers, such as gates and banked earth at fly-tip hotspots such as lay-bys and road-ends.
We're also calling on Hertsmere council leadership to prioritise the issue, but we're aware that cash is tight and staff have an unenviable job, which is why more support is needed.

As residents, we all have a part to play. If you come across fly-tipped waste, please report it via hertsmere.gov.uk/Report-It, and if it's in north Bushey, contact us, too. Don't assume someone else has already reported it. If you actually witness people fly-tipping, call 999. However, don't approach them and be careful about taking photographs - fly-tippers are unscrupulous criminals, so don't put yourself in harm's way.

Crucially, if you hire a 'man with a van' to remove your own household waste, always check that a waste carrier is registered with the the Environment Agency's by calling 03708 506596 or online at https://environment.data.gov.uk/.../search-waste-carriers... to check they are a licensed operator who will dispose of the waste responsibly. Ask what will happen to your waste and refuse any unsolicited offers to remove it.

If you'd like to discuss this with us further, e-mail teambushey@hertsmerelibdems.org or call 01923 549097.

Many thanks,
Jerry Evans and Paul Richards.
